First of all, let me clarify that this is meant to be a quick guide with a couple of tips from my own experience to getting a good shot.

With that said, let’s get started.

The first you might want to think about is what kind of shot do you want to take, and in what branch of photography does it fall into. Are you going to be shooting at animals and nature, portraits of people, fashion-like shots…etc. It’s important to know the style of shot because that way you know what to focus on the most. I’m really not going to go over all branches of photography. I’m only going to cover portraits in this quick guide / tips.

Well, to get a good portrait, the first thing you need to do is find someone to take a photo of. Duh!

Second thing you may want to think about is the place where you want to shots at - and this may depend on the purpose of the shot. Personally I don’t think the place you take the shot at is very important, you can pretty much get great shots anywhere, but is good to have an idea where the shooting will take place.

Then, you want to try different poses until you are satisfy with the shots you got. As the photographer you have to be very meticulous about your work. Make sure that every single piece of the photo is perfect before you finish shooting. By that I mean, there might be an unwanted object coming out in your photo, or just about anything else. So, check your photos well before you call it a day (I’m assuming you are using a digital camera - which allows you to review your images as you shoot).

Alright, so let’s go over some examples so you get an idea of what I’m talking about.

Example 1: “DON’T…”

Some of the things to notice about this shot is the reflexion on the wall, the model’s pose in general, and her facial expression. The reflexion on the wall is a little nice touch that adds to the image. The model’s pose, in this case is what makes the image. A crappy pose would’ve ruined this shot. Also, the way she positioned her legs is great (it makes sort of a triangle shape), and her back is pretty much straight (I’ll show you want I’m talking about). And lastly, her facial expression gives a character to the shot. The wrong face here would’ve ruined this shot too.

By the way, this photo was taken in a bathroom (again, place really doesn’t matter).Okay, so by now you are probably thinking I just sat her there and got “the shot’ - but, no, it was much harder than that. In fact, let me take you through a couple of the bad shots I took before I got “the one.”

This isn’t a terribly bad shot, but it wasn’t what I was looking for. Basically the curve on her back ruined it for me.

I don’t know, I just think is one is bad period. Her facial expression wasn’t the best, and her back wasn’t completely straight either. Though, we do see the triangles here, which is good I guess.

That’s it, after this one I got the right one. Of course, then I went and I edited it in photoshop. In this case I thought the black and white would really go with the shot; and I love it that way. You can scroll up to take a look at the finished product again.

Example 2: Wheee!

This is one of my favorite shots. In this case the subject was again, a person (a girl), and the whole point of the shot was to get her jumping in the air.

Some of the things to point out from this shot is the fact that I wanted to give the impression she was flying. As you can see, the photo was taken from a very low angle (floor level). It was very uncomfortable for me to take this shot. I mean, I was literally laying down on the floor taking the photo backwards. In any case, shotting from a 5th floor (and last one too) of parking lot was really helpful.

Okay, the red line on the floor is where I took the shot from. It kind of gives you an idea of that I was talking about earlier. Also, I circled her foot because it came out blurry. In this case, I boosted up the ISO (to 400 I think) to get faster shutter speed, thus eliminating the blurry spot.

Well, that’s it for now. I can really go on forever giving more examples, but I think for the purpose of this guide it’s good enough.

In conclusion, always make sure you know what you are doing and how you want to do it before you do it. A good model always helps and makes your job way easier. Also, reading this is great, but the best way to get better shots is trying and trying. So go out there and shoot, and shoot some more. Your experiences will speak for themselves.

Cara a Cara was a concert that took place at Alpha & Omega church in Miami, FL. I had the privilege to be one of the photographers at the event. See, one of the reasons I love my job is because I get free VIP passes, I get to enjoy the show, and I get paid for it.

Although a lot of artists performed at this concert, the main figures were “Funky” and “Manny Montes.” I had heard of Funky before, but this was the first time I heard about Manny Montes. They sing reggaeton, which I’m not really fund of, but I was just doing my job.

Personally, I think I’ve never seen so many people gathered for a church concert (mostly youth). I mean, the place was packed (full house).

Anyway, here is my favorite shot from the concert.

I’ve been in Flickr for about a month or so. And so far I have uploaded 66 photos to my photostream. Of which 4 have already made it to Flickr’s Explore, meaning that those pics are “interesting.” And I have about 60 contacts.

Now, I’ve come to the point where I had to ask myself “the question:” Is it really worth leaving comments to others in Flickr? Since I joined I have already made 650 comments. That’s really a lot of comments for such a short period of time.
Now, to answer my question, I needed to know how many comments others have left on my photos. And to my surprise it’s pretty close. People in Flickr have left 628 comments on my photos. That makes a ratio of 650/628, which means that for every 1.035 comments you make, you’ll get 1 comment back. If we round it off, it’s pretty close to a 1:1 ratio. For every comment you make, you’ll most likely get a comment back.

Well, enough with that. Now, it’s up to you to decide if it’s worth it. You’ll have to consider the fact that if you leave no comments, or few comments, you’ll receive no comments, or few comments. If you can live with that, then don’t leave comments to others. But if you are really looking to get lots of comments on your photos… leave lots of comments.

Some other things to consider would be posting your photos to the right groups. Flickr is full of groups that people just post photos without leaving any comments. Make sure that the groups you choose are groups that will leave you comments. For instance, groups that leave comments usually have rules that you have to comment in order to remain in the group.

Another way of getting comments is commenting on your contact’s photos. Be nice to your contacts. If you see a photo you like, leave a comment. It’s very likely that your contact would respond back with a comment on one of your photos.

In conclusion, like I said before, if you want comments, you have to leave comments (you rip what you sow).

Note: this article assumes that you take good photos.

For many years man has been proven wrong in many of his beliefs. I’m not the exception to the rule.

The other day I was just thinking about a lot of things. My head was just full of thoughts. Vane thoughts; of the kind that get you no where. Yet, in the misdt of all that mess, I was about to get something good out of it.

Before I go any deeper, let me introduce you to some of the things that were going on in my head so you have an idea of what I’m talking about. Well, the other day at church I had somewhat of a bad experience. Someone coming out of church blew off on my yelling out bad nick names…etc. It got me really hot. You have no idea how hot I was. I felt so much anger coming from the inside out that if I wasn’t because I love God so much, and I was actually at church, I would’ve kicked that guys butt so bad. I felt like taking a bat in my hands and just going up to him and beating him up so bad that he would be sorry for the rest of his life that he ever spoke that day. But no, thanks God I was able to control my emotions at that moment, and I just left the place quitly and in peace.

By now you are probably asking yourself, “what does that have to do with anything…?” Well, let me tell you. I left in peace from that place because I didn’t do anything against the guy, but still inside I was burning hot. And that’s when I started thinking so much useless thoughts. But, like I said before, I was able to obtain something good out of it.

So, here it is. This is what I thought may be a couple of hours after the insident. All that came to my mind was how much God used to use that guy that offended me. I remember listening to him preaching once, and “wow,” it was amazing. God used him big time that day. It was one of those preachings that really get to you, and it really got to me. At that point I saw God had prepared for him so much; so many blessing, and such an annointing. I saw it right there with my eyes, but it never happened. Now, don’t get me wrong. That doesn’t mean I’m totally hopeless about it, but the way things are I see him far from getting anywhere near where God wants him to be.

So, that’s when it came to me. It really hit me… I mean, God has prepared things for all of us. He has prepared blessings, and He has given us talents. But as I was thinking the other day I understood that no matter how much talent God puts in us; no matter how much he wants to bless us; we can really screw up everything. By that I mean, we can really get away from God’s plans for our lives and do I don’t know what?

It’s really a sad possition, but I realized that I’m not immune of it. God uses me, but if I’m not careful enough I could fall too. So, we really need to get closer and closer to God each and every day so we can do God’s plans in our lives. Sometimes it’s hard; I know, but with God’s help the impossible is possible. At the end, it’s God plan for your life.

Now that we are talking about this, let me ask you something. Why would God give you a great voice if He never intended for you to use it for his honor and glory? Why would God put something on your heart and then just forget about it? No way! Guess what? What God has for you is big, and it up to you to grab it. His blessings for you are there. Don’t let it pass by.

Yesterday I had the privilege of doing a photo shoot at a local pharmaceutical industry.

I was able to get there through my college. We are currently developing some courses for that company and I went there to take some pictures we can use on the courses.

It was a great experience to be able to go in there and actually see how pills are made. I thought it was really cool that I had to wear a white gown and something to cover my head. I had to wear it inside the facility, specially in the restricted areas.

The part that impressed me the most was when I was taken through a sealed area, which is where the heavy machinery is at. I don’t really remember much the machine names, but I do remember taking some pictures of the “mixer.” I’m not sure what it does, but I think it mixes stuff.

As you walk through the halls you can see part of the warehouse where all the pills are kept in boxes. Lots of boxes. There were people there driving fork lifts, and others carrying the boxes.

There are so many different areas in there that you can easily get lost. The place is huge. Though, I didn’t really get to see the entire place because of time restrictions.

Anyway, the only thing that really bugged me about the tour was that everything was very rushed. I didn’t really get much time to get creative with the pics I was taking, but after all I can’t complain.

Well, I’m really happy that I was able to take some pics at such an unusual place. It was really something.

Have you ever told anyone, “I love you?” You probably have, to your parents, friends, and close relatives.
When you say, “I love you” do you mean it? I think you probably do, normal people don’t go around saying it just like that. For some people the meaning of love might be a gorgeous looking girl/guy. For others it might be other things.

What is love?
As defined by the dictionary, love is a deep feeling of deep affection, a deep romantic or sexual attachment to someone. And it’s true, love fits to that meaning. That would be the love that a mother has for his/her child, the love of a couple…etc.

What’s the first thing that comes to your mind when you think of the word love?
Did you just think of him/her?
Usually when you think of love you think of someone you love, or you imagine beautiful things in your mind. Even when most people think of love this way, I have a different approach.

When I think of love I see trust,
Because love does not betray.
When I think of love I see forgiveness,
Because love does not keep track of your wrongs.
When I think of love I see kindness,
Because love is not rude.

When I think of love I see a God that we can trust,
When I think of love I see a God that forgives our sins,
When I think of love I see a God that never fails,
When I think of love I see a God that gave up his son so that we could live.
When I think of love I see Jesus dying at the cross for you and me.

Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres (1 Corinthians 13:4-7 NIV).

What I’m trying to say with all this is that love is not always pretty or as we imagine it. It takes courage to love someone. Love is more than just a word, it has a deep meaning. Sometimes love might mean forgiving someone for some wrong they might have done to you. The Bible says, love others as you love yourself (“love your neighbor as yourself” Leviticus 19:18 NIV). Well, there are people that have a hard time forgiving themselves when they mess up. I can imagine they have bigger issues forgiving others. Yet, that’s not all. The bible also tells us that we have to love our enemies. That’s a hard one. Loving our enemies basically means that they would stop being your enemies.
When it comes to love we have the greatest example from our Lord Jesus. He gave his life in sacrifice for us. Would you give your life to save a bunch of people? I don’t think so.

In conclusion, love is beautiful, nice, cute, and everything else that comes to your mind when you think of it, but also think of the things that imply loving someone. When you tell someone “I love you” then you are going to be saying, I’m here for you, I’m here to forgive you for any wrong you might do to me, I’m here to help you when you are in need, I’m here to lift you up when you fall…etc.

Remember, God is Love, and we have to be more like God.

Ok, I just ran into a big problem today. I was in a hurry getting ready to go to a youth event at my church. I wanted to take my camera to shoot some pics, so I went ahead and inserted the Memory Stick on my pc to check if there was anything on the memory that shouldn’t be erased or that I had not saved yet. All it had was some old files that I had saved already. So I went ahead and formatted the Memory Stick from windows. Now, just think about this! I formatted a camera’s memory card from Windows Vista Beta 2. A beta release is usually an unstable one, and in my rush I didn’t think about any of these things. To my surprise, when I tried the Memory Stick on my camera, suddenly an error warning showed up on the screen of the camera. I swear, I had never seen anything like this from my camera. It said something about error number 32 (which didn’t really tell me much). But since I have two extra Memory Sticks in addition to that one, I did pay much attention to what had just happened and I just went along to what I had to do.

Well, to make a long story short, when I got home at night I started to try things out to see what was wrong with the Memory Stick that I had formatted from Windows Vista Beta 2. While all these things were happening so many things were going through my head. I was trying to find out why the camera wouldn’t read the memory? At first I thought that because Windows Vista is a beta (it might have some things that don’t work properly), somehow it messed up my memory card. As I logged in to Windows XP Pro, I tried the memory and it worked just fine. At least that meant that the memory wasn’t “messed up” as I had thought before. So, then I went on trying a couple of things, but still the memory wouldn’t be read from the camera.

After thinking a little bit and trying out a good deal of things that didn’t work, finally my light bulb started to shine. Basically, my theory was that because I had formatted my memory from windows, it had been formatted in a file system that the camera doesn’t recognize. And yes, I was right about that one. The file system used by windows to format the memory was “NTFS” and sure, the memory doesn’t support that.

So yeah, at the end, to fix the problem I had to go into the command line (Start – Run – “cmd”) to format my memory stick properly. Using the format tool I was able to format the memory stick in “FAT” file system, which is what cameras and I think most removable media (mp3 players…etc) use.

The code I use to make it work is pretty simple: format m: /FS:fat

It basically tells the format tool to format drive m: (which is where my memory stick is located on my computer) using the FAT file system.

And without much more to say, thanks God everything worked well. I placed the memory in my camera and it read it perfectly.

Here is a screen shot of the command line:

This is a poem I wrote last night (to read the whole poem you have to click on the title).

I've done many things in my life,
but the best of all was meeting you.

I’ve done many things in my life,
But the best of all was meeting you.

I’ve made many decisions in my life,
Yet loving you is the most important I’ve ever taken.

I’ve been to many places in my life,
Yet they are only meaningful when you are there with me.

I’ve heard many things in my life,
Yet I just get excited when I hear your name.

I’ve talked about many things in my life,
But there is nothing like talking about you.

I’ve met many people in my life,
But there is none like you.

I’ve had many desires in my life,
But I desire you more than anything else.

I’ve loved many people in my life,
But never as much as I love you.

I wrote this poem last night. I not sure where I wanted to go with it, neither I believe is a great poem, but I just felt like writing it. Anyway, just to clear things out, I wrote this for God!!!
